Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs, Natural Cold Water Matine Fish oil)

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are essential to life, but are not produced by our bodies. We have to ingest them. Unfortunately, the average diet has few foods that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids: Cold water fish oils, certain seeds, and green leafy vegetables. Also food processors remove Omega 3 whenever possible, because these oils turn rancid easily. They replace them with hydrogenated oils. Researcher Donald Rudin has documented the declining intake of Omega 3 in the twentieth century, correlating the decline to the sharp increase of such modern illnesses as cardiovascular disease! In 1982 a Nobel Prize in Medicine was given for the discovery of how the metabolism of Omega 3 EFAs help to prevent heart problems.

Good Advice to Remember

Many people have been brainwashed into thinking that all fats are a dangerous addition to your diet, to be avoided at all costs. Don't believe it! The low-fat and no-fat chant of the American Heart Association and the national media simply do not reflect the research of the past decade. The onl truly dangerous fats in today's diets are the artificial fats that have been altered by long periods of heating (deep frying) or hydrogenation processing for a longer shelf life.

These partially hydrogenated fats or "trans-fatty acids" have no nutritional value. They are high-risk substances that cause coronary heart disease and impair the brain's ability to make its essential brain fats. Always avoid foods labeled with the words "may contain partially hydrogenated oil." This indicates the presence of the real killer fats, not the omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs we need for normal brain functioning.

B3, B6 and folic acid have a crucial role to play in how the brain makes its essential brain fats. Turning essential fats into building materials for the brain, making the receptor sites for neurotransmitters for example, require B vitamins. B-vitamins drive the enzymes that turn one essential fat into another. Essential fats are also converted into hormone-like prostaglandins by B vitamin dependent enzymes.
